The Castelfusano Pinewood was born around 1700 when the area was part of the property of the cardinal Sacchetti. In 1993 the city of Rome bought the holding and, to avoid people to build houses and destroy the vegetation, declared the Pinewood as an “environmentally important area”.
Subsequently, creating the Park of Castelfusano, people is now able to visit the holding with a guide and enjoy the beautiful environment. Even though the pinewood is so close to the sea, the vegetation consists of forest trees (pines, holm-oaks and common oaks).
An underwood of junipers, strawberry trees, lentisks, butcher’s brooms, privets, hawthorns, myrtles and others scented species is also present, and several races of birds such as woodpeckers, blackbirds, turtle doves, little owls, tawny owls and herons, but also hedgehogs, turtles, lizards, foxes, wild boars, beech marten and weasels, build nests and lairs in there.
As in the past, Castelfusano Pinewood is still today a place where people of all ages go and practice sport activities such as jogging, cycling (there are cycle paths everywhere), skating, tennis, or go and spend a a day in touch with nature organizing picnics and leisure activities.
