Macchiagrande Oasis

The Macchiagrande Oasis borders the town of Focene to the south, Fregene to the north ad the Mediterranean sea to the west; this area is part of the town of Fiumicino (Roma) and is situated by the crossroad between via Castellammare e via della Veneziana.
The Oasis extends for about 280 hectars and is managed by WWF since 1980. The history of this area is linked to the reclamation of the territory of Maccarese that involved about 9000 hectars of the area to the north of the Tiber mouth claimed to get new territory for agriculture.
Despite this operation and the following use of this area to hunt, to gather wood and to built charcoal piles, the oasis is virtually untouched.

The entrance is allowed on Sunday from 10.00 to 16.00, from October to May. Visits of organized groups or classes are allowed by previous booking: to book call 06.6685487. in summer there is a special calendar for the tours. For further information call on Tuesday and Thursday from 09.30 to 13.00. No cars are allowed in the oasis. It is possible to take pictures or videos during the tour.
