The name “Ciampino” comes from the name of Giovanni Giustino Ciampini (Rome 1633 – 1698), a priest, scientists and archaeologist.
Hamlet of Marino until 1974, Ciampino is today a town of the district of Rome with 38.242 inhabitants, close to via Appia. On the 8th September 2004 the president of the Republic gave Ciampino the status of “town”.
Today this town is strategically important as it acts as a buffer between Rome and the Roman Castles, either through the railway or through its main streets and highways, even though it still remains the dormitory town as it was in the early ‘90s.
